The Northern Rātā is one of Aotearoa’s most remarkable native trees. Often beginning life high within the branches of another tree, it sends roots down toward the whenua before eventually standing strong in its own right. Its journey reminds us that our beginnings do not define our future, and that the connections we nurture can help us grow and flourish.

The patterns woven throughout the flowers and leaves represent the people, experiences, and stories that strengthen our connection to who we are and where we come from. Like the roots of the Rātā reaching back to the earth, we too are continually returning to our reo, our hakapapa, and the wisdom of our tūpuna.
