Te Kōrero O Te Tūmanako - Kōwhai Print | Artist - Mumma G

When you see the Kōwhai burst into flower, you know a new season is beginning.

After standing quietly through the colder months, the Kōwhai adorns itself in brilliant shades of gold, reminding us that growth is often preceded by patience, reflection, and preparation.

This artwork, created by Mumma G, is a reflection on hope, resilience, and renewal. It reminds us that even after life’s most challenging seasons, there is always the promise of colour, light, and possibility ahead.

The Kōwhai teaches us patience, for the tree does not rush its flowering. Instead, it waits for the right time, trusting in the rhythms of Papatūānuku and the changing of the seasons.

Its vibrant flowers signal the arrival of the Pīpīwharauroa and attract the Tūī, bringing movement and song back into the landscape. Traditionally, the flowering of the Kōwhai was recognised as a seasonal marker, signalling a time of abundance and harvest.

Like the Kōwhai, we are not defined by the winters we endure, but by the courage we find to bloom once more.

Whether displayed within your whare, workspace, or place of reflection, this artwork invites you to trust the journey, embrace transformation, and believe that new beginnings are always possible.
